La championne du monde du 400 m en 2001 à Edmonton au Canada, Amy Mbacké Thiam a procédé, hier, au stade Léopold Sédar Senghor, l’ouverture de son club d’athlétisme dénommé “Cœur de Lion” pour relancer l’athlétisme au Sénégal en vue d’offrir au Sénégal ses futurs champions du monde ou ses futurs champions olympiques.
« C’est une manière pour moi de rendre la monnaie après avoir été formée par des techniciens sénégalais”, a-t-elle laissé entendre avant d’ajouter que « le Club Cœur de Lion a pour vocation de produire des écoles d’athlétisme mais pour d’autres disciplines à travers de l’ouverture d’autres écoles dans les autres régions”.
Cœur de Lion compte pour l’instant 30 jeunes (filles et garçons) qui seront suivis par un moniteur. Ils vont s’entrainer quatre fois par semaine. En fait Amy Mbacké Thiam espère offrir au Sénégal ses futurs champions du monde ou ses champions d’athlétisme. “Il faut les encadrer, les motiver pour que d’ici les jeux olympiques de Paris 2024 on ait des qualifiés”, a indiqué la 4ème vice-présidente de la Fédération sénégalaise d’athlétisme (FSA).
