Dakar, 3 avr (APS) – Au moins, cinq chefs militaires sénégalais ont dirigé des missions de maintien de la paix de l’Organisation des nations Unies (ONU) depuis l’accession du Sénégal à l’indépendance en 1960.
Le général Mountaga Diallo, décédé en septembre 2017, est le premier officier sénégalais à diriger une mission militaire des Nations unies.
Le général Diallo a dirigé de 2000 à 2003, la Mission des Nations unies en République démocratique du Congo, la MONUC, devenue MONUSCO.
Il a ouvert la voie aux autres officiers généraux sénégalais, dont Babacar Gaye, El Hadj Mouhamadou Kandji, Balla Keïta,
Après avoir dirigé les Forces armées sénégalaises et occupé le poste d’ambassadeur du Sénégal en Allemagne, le général Babacar Gaye est entré à l’Organisation des Nations unies en 2005.
En avril 2005, l’ancien Chef d’Etat-major des forces armées sénégalaise (CEMGA) est nommé comme commandant des forces de la Mission de l’Organisation des Nations unies en République démocratique du Congo (MONUC).
Le général Babacar Gaye quitte la MONUC en 2008. Il est nommé conseiller militaire pour les opérations de maintien de la paix et chef du bureau des affaires militaires au sein du département du maintien de la paix.
Le 12 juin 2013, le Secrétaire général des Nations unies, promeut le général de corps d’armée Babacar Gaye en tant que Représentant spécial et Chef du Bureau intégré des Nations unies pour la consolidation de la paix en République centrafricaine (BINUCA), basé à Libreville, au Gabon.
