Bernard Binlin Dadié est le seul écrivain africain à avoir passé le cap du centenaire. Une «performance» qui lui vaut d’être aujourd’hui plus célébré encore qu’auparavant. Son nom à été donné à une rue d’Abidjan et, en 2016, l’Unesco lui a décerné le premier prix Jaime Torres en saluant en lui «un pionnier et géant de la littérature africaine». La colonisation et ses effets traversent ses écrits.
Romancier, poète, conteur, dramaturge, il touche à tous les genres littéraires et rédige sa première pièce de théâtre, «Les Villes», à l’âge de 15 ans. Son oeuvre d’une vingtaine d’ouvrages est lue et étudiée dans de nombreux pays francophones. Comme «Le Pagne noir» publié en 1955 et vantant le patrimoine africain méconnu. Militant anti-colonial, il s’engage ensuite en politique aux côtés du président Houphouët-Boigny dont il devient le ministre de la Culture (1977-1986)
