Un vrai problème de santé publique : ce composant interdit à la vente libre en France conduit, en application cutanée, au vieillissement prématuré de la peau et à de multiples complications irréversibles. En inhibant la production de la mélanine, il fait perdre à la peau sa protection naturelle contre les rayons du soleil et la rend plus sujette à certains types de cancers. Ce produit dangereux peut aussi amincir la peau, laissant apparaître des taches foncées ou des vergetures définitives. D’autres effets secondaires sont à noter, notamment l’ochronose, une pigmentation bleuâtre ou noirâtre.
