Pour Kalidou Koulibaly, il a choisi le Sénégal en septembre 2015 après avoir joué dans les sélections de jeunes de la France. Le défenseur du Napoli est revenu sur ce choix.
“Ma femme a motivé mon choix de jouer pour Sénégal, révèle-t-il dans l’émission Talents d’Afrique sur Canal+. Elle m’a dit : ‘à 25 ans, il serait peut-être temps d’évoluer dans une sélection nationale’. Après, je voulais rendre quelque chose à ma famille qui m’a donné ses racines du Sénégal. (…) Quand j’ai fait ce choix, j’ai vu beaucoup de joie dans leurs yeux. (…) Depuis lors, je ne regrette pas de porter les couleurs du Sénégal.”
Plus de deux ans après, il est un cadre de l’équipe d’Aliou Cissé et enchaîne les bonnes performances. Kalidou Koulibaly a déjà l’esprit vers la Coupe du monde 2018 en Russie.
