Un millier de mineurs étaient bloqués jeudi sous terre, apparemment en bonne santé, à plusieurs centaines de mètres de profondeur dans une mine d’or d’Afrique du Sud, victimes d’une panne d’électricité provoquée par un violent orage.
Selon la compagnie Sibanye Gold, propriétaire de la mine, cette coupure de courant a provoqué un arrêt des ascenseurs et empêché la remontée de la presque totalité de l’équipe de nuit de la mine de Beatrix, près de la ville de Welkom (centre).
Seule une soixantaine de salariés ont jusque-là pu être remontés sains et saufs à la surface, a précisé un porte-parole de Sibanye Gold, James Wellsted, sur la chaîne d’information locale eNCA.
“Il y a encore 950 mineurs qui doivent être remontés à la surface”, a ajouté M. Wellsted.
Le Syndicat national des mineurs (NUM) a pour sa part indiqué que 800 salariés étaient coincés au fond du puits numéro 3 et 300 autres dans le puits numéro 2.
“Nous avons fait descendre des équipes de secours, recensé tout le monde et nous essayons bien sûr de les remonter à la surface le plus vite possible”, a expliqué le porte-parole de Sibanye Gold.
“Tous les salariés semblent se porter bien. Nous leur fournissons de la nourriture et de l’eau”, a-t-il précisé à l’AFP.
La profondeur à laquelle les mineurs étaient bloqués restait à préciser. Les galeries les plus basses de la mine de Beatrix descendent jusqu’à 1.000 m sous la surface.
Selon M. Wellsted, les équipes de secours tentaient de mettre en service des générateurs électriques de secours susceptibles de faire fonctionner les ascenseurs.
