La secrétaire générale de la Commission économique pour l’Afrique, Vera Songwe, encourage les pays à s’emparer des nouvelles technologies.
Vera Songwe est une femme d’influence. Régulièrement nommée parmi les Africaines qui comptent, la Camerounaise, née à Nairobi, occupe depuis le 13 avril le très convoité fauteuil de secrétaire général de la Commission économique pour l’Afrique (CEA), qui assoit une réputation dans la sphère économique du continent. À 49 ans, celle qui a également le rang de secrétaire général adjoint de l’ONU a succédé, à la surprise générale, au très charismatique Carlos Lopes, démissionnaire après quatre années à ce poste.
Première femme à occuper cette fonction, Vera Songwe n’est pas une inconnue. Économiste de formation, passée par les meilleures universités, elle entre en 1998 à la Banque mondiale (BM). Elle y reste près de vingt ans, alternant les postes à Washington, au siège de l’institution. Elle y travaille notamment sous les ordres de la Nigériane Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, directrice générale de 2007 à 2011.
Cette même année, Vera Songwe représente la BM à Dakar, avant d’être nommée en 2016 à la tête du bureau régional pour l’Afrique de l’Ouest et l’Afrique centrale de la Société financière internationale (IFC), la filiale de la BM consacrée au secteur privé. C’est là que viendra la chercher António Guterres, quelques mois seulement après sa propre nomination en tant que secrétaire général de l’ONU. Réputée plus orthodoxe que son prédécesseur, Vera Songwe doit maintenant orienter, depuis Addis-Abeba, la réflexion des gouvernements africains en matière de politique de développement.

Vera Songwe : Toute rencontre permettant à des partenaires de discuter des problèmes est utile. Nous sommes dans un monde globalisé qui demande des réponses globales sur des questions qui concernent la planète entière : le changement climatique, les problématiques de paix et de sécurité, de développement et de croissance économique.
Il faut un dialogue permanent pour affiner les positions, dégager des stratégies communes. C’est ce que permet ce genre de sommet en jouant un rôle de plateforme de discussion.
