Il est né le 28 janvier 1978 à Dakar, Sénégal. Il a évolué au poste de milieu de terrain. Très athlétique, il mesure 1,94 m et pèse 94 kg. Au sein de l’équipe nationale sénégalaise, il a marqué le but victorieux contre la France lors du match d’ouverture de la Coupe du monde de 2002 . Auteur de deux autres buts lors de cette coupe du monde où le Sénégal ne s’est arrêté qu’en quart de finale, il fait partie, selon le journal Le Monde, d’une liste de onze jeunes joueurs qui se sont révélés au cours de cette coupe du monde et qui devrait confirmer à l’avenir. Il est également le meilleur buteur sénégalais en phase finale de coupe du monde avec 3 réalisations.
Son palmarès n’est pas vierge. Il a été finaliste de la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations en 2002, quart de finaliste de la Coupe du monde de 2002, Champion de Suisse en 2001 avec Grasshopper Zurich, Vice-champion de ligue1 en 2002 avec RC Lens, Vainqueur en de FA Cup en 2008 avec Portsmouth, Finaliste de FA Cup en 2010 avec Portsmouth, Vainqueur de la coupe de Grèce en Coupe de Grèce 2011.
