Le procès en appel de l’étudiant Mamadou Diop tué le 23 juin 2011 à la Place de l’Obélisque s’est tenu hier au niveau du Tribunal de grande instance de Dakar.
Le Procureur général a demandé à la Cour de confirmer la décision prise le 15 janvier 2016, en première instance, condamnant les policiers Ousmane Thiam et Wagane Souaré respectivement à deux ans et trois mois de prison ferme.
Les prévenus qui comparaissaient libres devant cette juridiction de jugement, étaient le jour des faits au volant du fameux « Dragon » de la police.
C’est ce véhicule anti-émeute qui avait mortellement fauché, on se le rappelle, le jeune étudiant. Ce dernier qui protestait contre une troisième candidature du Président Abdoulaye Wade à l’élection présidentielle de 2012, à l’appel du M23, a rendu l’âme au moment de son évacuation d’urgence à l’hôpital.
Lors de leur procès devant la barre du Tribunal correctionnel de Dakar, les deux policiers incriminés avaient nié les faits qui leur étaient reprochés.
Mais le Tribunal convaincu de leur culpabilité les avait reconnu coupables de coups mortels et de non-assistance à personne en danger.
Dans la foulée, l’État du Sénégal avait été également reconnu civilement responsable de la mort du jeune manifestant et condamné à verser à la famille de la victime, en guise de dommages et intérêts, la bagatelle de 20 millions CFA.
La partie civile insatisfaite de cette décision de justice avait interjeté appel.
