En instituant le Magal en 1925, à Ndiarème, Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba Mbacké déclarait que son Seigneur lui a donné d’immenses bienfaits à tel point que sa seule et souveraine gratitude ne le couvre plus, et qu’il fait appel à tous ceux qui partagent son bonheur à se joindre à lui dans son action de grâce. C’est ainsi que Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba entreprit d’appeler toute la communauté musulmane pour rendre Grâce à Allah devant tant de mansuétude.
Ensuite il recommande de le célébrer comme l’Aïd-el-Kébir (Tabaski). Il continue en ces termes : «Je n’affirme pas que le Magal est meilleur que la Tabaski, mais il l’est pour vous (les Mourides) assurément. Certes, la notion de temps se dissipera dans la grandeur du Paradis, mais Dieu le Créateur, l’Omnipotence Qui embrasse tout par Sa science, saura Lui la périodicité de ce jour ; chaque fois que viendra ce jour du 18 Safar, Dieu fera pour moi et pour tous ceux qui magnifient ce jour des bienfaits si grandioses que les gens du Paradis s’en rendront compte, quoique inouïe que soit la vie paradisiaque».
Aussi : «Que celui qui a deux moutons, sacrifie l’un à la tabaski, et garde l’autre pour mon jour ; quant à celui qui a un seul mouton qu’il le garde pour le Magal», continuait-il.
À la suite de ces propos, certains disciples se mirent à parler de “tabaskiwaat”, expression wolof qui signifie “refaire la tabaski”.
Et lorsque, le Cheikh en fût informé, il ordonna qu’on l’appelle Magal, afin de marquer la différence avec la tabaski ; mais aussi sans doute pour ne pas permettre à certains détracteurs de profiter de cette mal-interprétation.
C’est ainsi que le 18 Safar fût marqué jour du Magal, dont le sens se résume à travers trois symboles :
Action de grâce, Réjouissance,
Le Magal est un terme wolof qui signifie rendre grâce, célébrer, magnifier.
Dans le Coran, ALLAH le Très-Haut dit :
«À chaque peuple de la communauté [musulmane], nous avons offert une occasion de fête pour témoigner leur gratitude. Mais qu’ils ne contrarient pas ce qui est ordonné. Appelle les plutôt vers ton Maître car tu es sur la voie droite.» (S.22 V.67)
