Selon plusieurs témoignages, le bilan aurait pu être beaucoup plus lourd si le véhicule qui a perdu ses freins n’avait pas percuté une camionnette blanche qui a ralenti sa course. Le car rapide en provenance de la Foire a fait une sortie de route, près du rond-point de Nord Foire. Le véhicule, qui a visiblement perdu ses freins, s’est alors dirigé vers les vendeuses présentes sur les trottoirs qui bordent la route. Ces dernières ont alors pris leurs jambes à leur cou. L’une des victimes présentes qui a voulu échapper à la «voiture folle» est violemment percutée. Elle est tombée avant de voir le car lui rouler dessus.
