Notre corps produit naturellement des radicaux libres : c’est le résultat de différents processus chimiques et électriques irréversibles. Ces molécules instables sont notamment impliquées dans le vieillissement cutané et le développement de certaines pathologies dégénératives, comme la maladie d’Alzheimer.
Heureusement, les radicaux libres sont produits de manière naturelle en toute petite quantité… C’est lorsque l’on est accro à la cigarette que les choses se corsent : le tabac accélère en effet ce processus, provoquant l’apparition d’un grand nombre de radicaux libres dans l’organisme. Ce qui peut – par exemple – favoriser l’apparition de cancers.
Une étude publiée le 8 janvier 2016 dans la revue scientifique Toxicological and Environmental Chemistry vient cependant de montrer que le miel pourrait être un bon complément alimentaire pour les personnes qui fument.
Pour le vérifier, une expérience a été menée sur deux groupes de volontaires – tous fumeurs. Le premier groupe devait consommer 20 g de miel par jour (du miel bio, de la variété Tualang), tandis que le second groupe, lui, n’y avait pas droit.
Résultat ; au bout de 3 mois d’observation, les chercheurs ont observé que les volontaires du groupe 1 avaient des taux significativement plus faibles de radicaux libres dans leur organisme et significativement plus élevés d’antioxydants, des molécules dont le rôle est (justement) de lutter contre les radicaux libres.
Évidemment, une consommation quotidienne de miel (même massive…) ne suffit pas à contrer les effets du tabac sur la santé. L’idéal, cela reste quand même d’arrêter !
