Selon le Global Livability Index 2017 publié par The Economist Intelligence Unit, seules deux villes africaines se classent dans le Top 100 des métropoles les plus habitables de la planète. En effet, seules les villes de Johannesburg et de Pretoria (toutes deux situées en Afrique du Sud) sont dans ce classement qui a toujours à sa tête, la ville australienne de Melbourne. On notera cependant que deux villes africaines (Abidjan et Harare) sont parmi celles qui ont réalisé les plus gros progrès sur les cinq dernières années.
En dépit de ce signe positif, neuf des 15 villes du continent, incluses dans cette étude, se retrouvent parmi les 20 cités en queue de peloton avec 5 se situant dans le top 10 des villes les moins habitables de ce classement. Il s’agit notamment de Douala, Harare, Alger, Tripoli et Lagos, bon avant-dernier, juste devant Damas. L’étude qui a pris en compte 140 villes, a procédé à des notations en se basant sur les critères de l’accès aux soins de santé, à l’éducation, à la culture, de la qualité des infrastructures, de l’environnement et enfin, de la stabilité.
