Le président américain a décidé ce mardi de ne pas poursuivre le programme mis en place par Barack Obama, mettant des centaines de milliers de jeunes sans-papiers à l’abri d’une expulsion et leur permettant d’étudier et de travailler aux États-Unis. Le chef de l’État, qui s’était engagé à aborder ce dossier sensible «avec cœur», ne s’est pas personnellement exprimé sur cette décision qui devrait provoquer une tempête politique à Washington, laissant son ministre de la Justice, Jeff Sessions, monter en première ligne.
À compter de ce jour, aucune nouvelle demande ne sera examinée. Le sort de quelque 800.000 personnes qui bénéficient déjà de ce statut, connues sous le nom de «Dreamers», ne sera pas affecté jusqu’au 5 mars 2018, délai de six mois accordé par l’administration pour que le Congrès légifère sur ce thème. Un compromis sur un sujet qui divise Washington depuis des années apparaît cependant loin d’être acquis. Et de nombreuses questions restent sans réponse pour ces milliers de jeunes le plus souvent complètement intégrés à la société américaine: que se passera-t-il si aucune solution n’est trouvée à l’issue du délai fixé par la présidence?
