Aux Etats-Unis se tenait le procès de l’ancien rebelle libérien Mohammed Jabateh. Cet ex-commandant de l’Ulimo est impliqué dans la première guerre civile au Liberia dans les années 1990. Celui qu’on surnomme «Jungle Jabah» a été reconnu coupable de fraude et parjure pour avoir menti aux autorités américaines dans le but d’obtenir l’asile. Mais en réalité, son procès a plutôt porté sur son rôle pendant la guerre civile libérienne.
Pour prouver que Mohammed Jabateh a menti pour s’installer aux Etats-Unis, les procureurs devaient faire la preuve que ce père de cinq enfants était, au début des années 1990, le chef d’un groupe rebelle, l’Ulimo. Ils ont donc appelé à la barre une quinzaine de témoins venus du Liberia pour raconter au jury les atrocités auxquelles ils avaient survécu.
Pendant deux semaines, il a donc été question de meurtres, de viol et de cannibalisme. Mais il a surtout été question de Mohammed Jabateh, un quinquagénaire qui gagne sa vie dans l’import-export, que personne n’appelle plus Jungle Jabah. Le jury l’a déclaré coupable, et il n’est pas exclu que la défense ne fasse appel.
C’est un procès historique parce que c’est la première fois que les victimes libériennes de crimes de guerre sont entendues par un tribunal. Jusqu’à maintenant, aucune cour n’a jugé qui que ce soit pour des crimes commis au Libéria. Pour rappel, l’ex-président Charles Taylor a été condamné pour des crimes commis en Sierra Leone, mais pas chez lui.
Il sera toutefois beaucoup question du Libéria l’année prochaine. Car de présumés criminels de guerre devraient se retrouver dans le box des accusés en Belgique, en Suisse et au Royaume-Uni. Ce procès de Philadelphie pourrait inciter les témoins à dénoncer leurs bourreaux, du moins ceux qui vivent en Europe.
