Le Mali est l’un des pays le plus en retard au monde dans le domaine de la contraception. Pourtant, ces dernières années, de nombreuses initiatives sont mises en place sur le terrain avec comme objectif d’espacer les naissances.
Moins de 10% des femmes maliennes en âge d’avoir des enfants utilisent une solution de contraception. Parfois, elles n’en connaissent même pas l’existence, mais souvent, c’est parce que leur époux s’y oppose.
L’Ong Mary Stopes a mis en place des écoles des maris pour inverser la tendance, comme l’explique Edouard Kéïta : «Pour toucher les femmes, nous avons pris comme cible les maris. Très souvent au Mali, nous avons des barrières qui empêchent les femmes d’avoir des produits de contraceptions et notamment l’opposition des maris. C’est pourquoi nous avons mis en place ces écoles des maris. Nous formons des maris modèles en planification familiale, en santé de la reproduction et tout ce qui est de l’ordre de l’aspect santé et développement de la femme, de la famille et de la communauté».
Le Mali s’est engagé depuis quelques années dans une politique ferme d’espacement des naissances. Dans le centre d’appel de l’Ong, Adama Sanogo décroche inlassablement son téléphone : «C’est comme ça que les gens posent des questions tabou. Et c’est à nous de les pousser pour aller au fond de leur idée, de mettre la cliente en confiance, de la pousser à dire les choses qu’elle pense».
Autre objectif pour le Mali : retarder l’âge de la première grossesse et faire baisser le taux de mortalité maternelle.
