Le séisme de magnitude 7,1 sur l’échelle de Richter, dont l’épicentre était situé à 130 km au sud-est de la capitale, a provoqué l’effondrement d’une cinquantaine d’immeubles dans la mégapole de 20 millions d’habitants. Au lendemain du puissant séïsme, le deuxième en deux semaines, les secours épaulés par des centaines de volontaires s’activent pour retrouver au plus vite des survivants.
A mesure que le temps passe, l’inquiétude monte concernant le sort des enfants de l’école Enrique Rebsamen de Mexico. Entre 30 et 40 écoliers seraient toujours prisonniers des décombres. Ailleurs dans la capitale, plusieurs dizaines d’immeubles se sont effondrés et de nombreux autres ont subi d’importants dégâts, empêchant des milliers de familles de rentrer chez elles.
