Le président camerounais Paul Biya, 85 ans, dont bientôt trente-six au pouvoir, a annoncé vendredi 13 juillet, sur Twitter sa candidature à un septième mandat consécutif à la tête du pays, lors de l’élection prévue le 7 octobre.
« Conscient des défis que nous devons ensemble relever pour un Cameroun encore plus uni, stable et prospère (…) j’accepte de répondre favorablement à vos appels pressants », écrit le chef de l’Etat, mettant fin à un faux suspense.
Plusieurs autres candidats
Les opposants qualifient le bilan de l’actuel chef de l’Etat de « chaotique ». Parmi eux, Joshua Osih, qui a été investi en février candidat du principal parti d’opposition, le Social Democratic Front (SDF, anglophone).
Cet homme d’affaires de 49 ans tentera de briguer un septennat à ce scrutin au suffrage universel à un tour, comme l’avait fait lors de la plupart des scrutins précédents Ni John Fru Ndi, leader du SDF et opposant historique à Biya, qui aurait cette fois décidé de céder la place aux « jeunes cadets » du parti.
Parmi les autres candidats de poids de l’opposition, selon les analystes, figurent l’avocat et ancien vice-président de Transparency International, Akere Muna, ainsi que le président du parti Mouvement pour la renaissance du Cameroun (MRC), Maurice Kamto. En l’absence de sondages d’opinion, il est toutefois difficile d’estimer le poids réel de chacune de ces personnalités politiques.
