Une fusée « Zenit », fournie par une entreprise ukrainienne à la Russie, a décollé depuis le cosmodrome de Baïkonour. Elle était chargée de mettre en orbite le premier satellite de télécommunication angolais, Angosat 1. C’est le quatrième satellite africain mis en orbite en 2017.
Le bébé est moitié russe, moitié angolais, résultat d’un partenariat entre le secteur spatial russe et le gouvernement de Luanda. Angosat1 est le premier satellite de communication de l’Angola.
Il a pour mission d’améliorer l’offre de télécommunication, radio et télévision du pays, particulièrement dans les coins les plus reculés du territoire. Comme il va couvrir également une partie de l’Afrique, le pays espère vendre des services à d’autres pays voisins.
Il s’agit donc d’un projet avant tout commercial pour ce pays confronté à d’importants problèmes économiques et actuellement à des pénuries de carburant. Une situation paradoxale, puisque l’Angola produit plus d’1,5 millions de barils de pétrole par jour.
Le spatial est également une affaire de prestige et de formation : 45 ingénieurs angolais sont partis se former en Russie. Ils vont être chargés de gérer le traitement des données envoyés par le satellite. Un travail qui va être effectué depuis un bâtiment flambant neuf, construit pour l’occasion près de Luanda, la capitale du pays. Des étudiants en ingénierie des télécommunications sont également en formation en Chine, en Russie et au Japon.
L’Angola devient ainsi la septième nation africaine à posséder un engin en orbite géostationnaire au-dessus de la Terre. Le Maroc et le Ghana qui ont également lancé un satellite en 2017.
