On croyait le tableau disparu pour toujours, il refait surface quarante-quatre ans plus tard. « Tutu », œuvre emblématique de Ben Enwonwu, l’un des plus grands artistes contemporains nigérians refait parler d’elle. Le tableau de cette « Mona Lisa africaine » a récemment été retrouvé dans la maison d’un particulier de Londres. Une histoire aussi inattendue que réjouissante pour les Nigérians et les amateurs d’art.
Les traits fins, le regard lointain, un turban mauve sur la tête, un drapé indigo retombant sur l’épaule, ce portrait qui a tout d’une Joconde n’est autre que la princesse Ife, Adetutu Ademiluyi, surnommée « Tutu ». Ben Enwonmu, secrètement amoureux de son modèle, l’avait peint en 1974 en trois exemplaires.
Reproduit plusieurs milliers de fois, sur toile ou sur papier, ce tableau d’une rare intensité est très vite devenu le symbole de l’art et de la beauté nigériane. L’emblème aussi d’une nation réunifiée après le conflit biafrais. Le portrait a pourtant été perdu de vue après une exposition à Lagos en 1975. Il aura fallu une vente aux enchères à Londres, fin 2017, pour que la maison Bonhams soit contactée pour une expertise.
Giles Peppiatt, directeur de la section art africain de la maison d’enchères, se rend alors dans un foyer du nord de la capitale britannique. Il croit d’abord avoir affaire à une de ces nombreuses reproductions. Mais doit se rendre à l’évidence : c’est un des originaux.
Stupéfaction de la famille qui avait toujours connu ce tableau ramené par le paternel d’un voyage d’affaires au Nigeria. Réjouissance dans les milieux de l’art contemporain africain.
« Tutu » sera mis aux enchères le 28 février prochain. Le prix moyen estimé est de 282 000 euros. Un record pour une œuvre africaine qui pourrait bien être largement dépassé.
