Reproduit plusieurs milliers de fois, sur toile ou sur papier, ce tableau d’une rare intensité est très vite devenu le symbole de l’art et de la beauté nigériane. L’emblème aussi d’une nation réunifiée après le conflit biafrais. Le portrait a pourtant été perdu de vue après une exposition à Lagos en 1975. Il aura fallu une vente aux enchères à Londres, fin 2017, pour que la maison Bonhams soit contactée pour une expertise.
Giles Peppiatt, directeur de la section art africain de la maison d’enchères, se rend alors dans un foyer du nord de la capitale britannique. Il croit d’abord avoir affaire à une de ces nombreuses reproductions. Mais doit se rendre à l’évidence : c’est un des originaux.
