Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, le directeur général de l’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) a déclaré avoir «annulé», dimanche 22 octobre, la nomination du président du Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, comme ambassadeur de bonne volonté auprès de l’OMS, expliquant que cela était dans l’intérêt de l’agence de l’ONU après la controverse provoquée par sa décision.

Son souhait dit-il, «était d’associer tout le monde à l’amélioration des systèmes de soin». Alors, avec cette annulation, il veut mettre un terme à la polémique. Hier soir dans un tweet il disait déjà qu’«il entendait les inquiétudes».
Car, partout dans le monde, des voix se sont rapidement élevées pour demander à l’OMS d’annuler la nomination de Robert Mugabe comme ambassadeur de bonne volonté pour les maladies non transmissibles. Dernière réaction en date : celle du Canada. Dans un communiqué le ministère des Affaires mondiales du pays explique : qu’«étant donné la gravité des violations des droits de la personne sous le régime Mugabe, une nomination de ce genre est inconcevable et inacceptable.»
Avant le Canada, la Grande-Bretagne a dénoncé une décision «surprenante et décevante». Les Etats Unis ont souligné que cette nomination allait à l’encontre des idéaux des Nations unies. Organisations de défense des droits de l’homme et opposition au Zimbabwe ont également crié au scandale. Selon elles, le système de santé s’est effondré sous le régime de Robert Mugabe. La plupart des hôpitaux manque de tout. Alors que le Président Mugabe va, lui, se faire soigner à l’étranger.
