La mort d’un soldat français des forces spéciales en Irak met en lumière le secret autour de leurs missions.
C’était un texte court et prudent. Samedi soir, l’Élysée publie un court communiqué, déplorant la mort d’un militaire français, adjudant du 13e régiment des dragons parachutistes, “tué au combat” au Levant. Soit dans la zone irako-syrienne. C’est le premier militaire français qui meurt dans cette zone depuis l’entrée de la France dans l’opération Chammal, lancée en septembre 2014. Elle mobilise 1.200 soldats français.
On ne connaît ni l’identité du militaire, ni le lieu exact où il a trouvé la mort, et ce “afin de ne pas le révéler à l’ennemi”, précise le colonel Patrick Steiger à l’AFP. Car officiellement, la France ne combat pas dans cette zone. En réalité, depuis mars 2015, des commandos français sont bien présents sur le territoire irakien, rappelle Le Parisien.
Conseils et expertises
En tout, on compte une centaine de personnes. Leur mission: former les soldats irakiens, et épauler les combattants kurdes. Ils ne combattent donc pas directement, mais conseillent et apportent leur expertise. Les détails des missions ne sont jamais connus du public: l’état-major n’a donc livré aucun détail sur les circonstances de la mort du soldat.
Le Levant n’est pas la seule région du monde où la France agit en secret. En 2016 déjà, trois militaires français avaient été tués en Libye. À cette occasion, le porte-parole du gouvernement de l’époque, Stéphane Le Foll, avait confirmé la tenue d’opérations secrètes de la France en Libye. “Les forces spéciales sont là. Bien sûr pour aider, et faire en sorte que la France soit présente partout pour lutter contre les terroristes”. Les trois militaires appartenaient au centre parachutiste d’instruction spécialisée de Perpignan.
