L’ambassadeur des Etats Unis d’Amérique (USA) en Guinée, Dennis Hankins, a réitéré, ce lundi, l’opposition de son pays contre un changement éventuel de la constitution devant permettre à l’actuel président guinéen, Alpha Condé, de briguer un troisième mandat successif.
Je sais que les gens sont en train de dire qu’ils veulent un troisième mandat mais je dois noter que le président lui-même ne s’est jamais exprimé sur cette question très importante », a dit le diplomate américain, invité, ce lundi, dans l’émission « Les Grandes Gueules » de la radio Espace FM.
Poursuivant, il ajoute : « Je lui ai déjà dit, et aussi parlé en public, qu’au cas où il y aurait une tentative de changement de constitution, nous sommes contre. Je souligne que le président lui-même ne l’a pas dit mais s’il y a une tentative éventuelle dans cette tendance alors nous serons contre, comme dans tous les autres pays ».
Elu en 2010 et réélu en 2015, l’actuel président, Alpha Condé, doit achever son second et dernier mandat en 2020. Mais au fur et à mesure que la date butoir approche, des proches du régime, dont des députés et des hauts responsables de la police, invitent le Chef de l’Etat à tenter un troisième mandat.
En réaction, les leaders de l’opposition guinéenne ont, souvent, menacé, de s’opposer à ce projet dans la rue
« Les Etats Unis sont contre le changement de la constitution partout dans le monde, en faveur des gens qui sont en place », a encore fait remarquer le diplomate américain.
« En Afrique centrale, plus précisément au Rwanda, ils ont changé la constitution pour avoir le troisième mandat. Nous étions contre ce changement mais ils l’ont fait quand même. Il y a un débat de troisième mandat au Congo, alors je ne suis pas certain si ça va avancer ou pas », a-t-il conclu.
