La crise humanitaire au Yémen et le blocus imposé par l’Arabie saoudite depuis dimanche 5 novembre ont été au centre de discussions à huis clos du Conseil de sécurité hier mercredi 8. A la demande de la Suède, les 15 membres se sont mis d’accord pour réclamer la levée du blocus. Cependant, pour préserver l’allié saoudien de trop vives critiques, ils ont aussi condamné le tir de missile par les rebelles yéménites Houthis, pro-iraniens, qui a déclenché cette escalade des tensions.

Visiblement embarrassés par cette nouvelle crise ouverte, les diplomates se sont réunis en privé sur la question humanitaire, la seule qui fasse l’unanimité sur le dossier yéménite au Conseil de sécurité.
L’ONU a ainsi réclamé d’une même voix la réouverture des accès terrestres, maritimes et aériens vers le Yémen pour permettre à l’aide de rentrer sans quoi le pays pourrait connaître, selon le chef des opérations humanitaires Marc Lowcock la « plus grande famine des dernières décennies ».

Une famine qui pourrait faire selon lui des millions de victimes supplémentaires alors que le pays est déjà dévasté : 21 millions de personnes ont un besoin d’aide alimentaire urgent, 7 millions sont en situation de famine et qu’un million de cas de choléra ont été répertoriés.
Pour accentuer la pression, le secrétaire général Antonio Guterres a appelé le ministre des Affaires étrangères saoudien. Il lui aurait assuré que le blocus ne serait que « temporaire », preuve de la relative impunité dont bénéficie le Royaume saoudien, grand donateur aux Nations unies et qui a des alliés de poids avec les Etats-Unis, de la France, des Britanniques et des Egyptiens au sein du Conseil.
Le pays connait la pire crise humanitaire au monde avec 21 millions de personnes en besoin d’aide humanitaire et 7 millions en situation de famine. En plus de l’aide humanitaire de première nécessité, le fuel vient à manquer.
