Le divorce est devenu un phénomène récurant au Sénégal. En 2013, le nombre de divorces s’est élevé à 126286 au Sénégal. La majorité des cas concernent les femmes avec 96 049 personnes et les 30 236 sont des hommes. Rien qu’à Dakar, durant l’année 2015, le Tribunal départemental a eu à prononcer 1775 divorces. En moyenne, depuis 2014, à Dakar, par exemple, près de 400 cas de Divorces sont prononcés par les tribunaux, par mois.
Un recensement récent rapportait que « les divorcés sont plus nombreux dans la région de Dakar (2,5%), suivie par les régions de Matam et Saint-Louis, avec 1,5% chacune (identique à la moyenne nationale).
