Un sommet de trois jours contre les mariages des enfants en Afrique de l’Ouest et du Centre commence ce lundi à Dakar.
Durant ce sommet, des ministres, des chefs religieux et traditionnels ainsi que des agences des Nations Unies et des organisations caritatives vont faire le point sur les avancées enregistrées pour mettre fin à ce phénomène.
Les mariages des enfants sont courants dans six des dix pays d’Afrique de l’Ouest et centrale. Les taux les plus élevés y sont enregistrés avec au Niger, 76% des filles de moins de 18 ans sont mariées ou forcées au mariage, 68% en République centrafricaine et au Tchad, plus de 50% au Mali et en Guinée.
Une fois mariées, les filles abandonnent généralement l’école. Et pourtant, l’accès des filles à l’éducation est considéré comme le meilleur moyen de combattre cette pratique.
Les parents pauvres donnent tôt en mariage leurs filles pour réduire leur charge financière.
