Saint-Louis, 30 mars (APS) – L’enseignant-chercheur à l’université Gaston Berger de Saint-Louis, Pr Dah Dieng, a souligné vendredi la nécessité de trouver ’’des solutions alternatives, urgentes et durables” à l’érosion côtière au niveau de la Langue de Barbarie.
Pr Dieng a souligné que depuis le creusement d’un canal de délestage en 2003, la brèche s’est élargie de 4 mètres à 5,3 kilomètres. Selon lui, c’est un danger réel pour la suivie dans cette zone fortement touchée par l’érosion côtière provoquée par l’avancée de la mer.
Le professeur de géographie à l’UGB introduisait une communication sur : “Changement climatique et érosion côtière de Saint-Louis : état des lieux des connaissances et des solutions”, à l’occasion d’un forum organisé par la Convention des Saint-louisiens (30 au 31mars).
La rencontre présidée par le maire de Saint-Louis, Mansour Faye a enregistré la présence de plusieurs cadres, dignitaires, experts en environnement.
“De grandes inquiétudes planent sur Saint-Louis, dont une partie de l’île, la Langue de Barbarie, l’îlot des oiseaux migratoires sont menacés de disparaître, si des solutions rapides ne sont pas prises afin de d’arrêter le canal de délestage, grâce à une digue de protection’’, relève l’universitaire.
Selon lui, un problème réel de sécurité des pêcheurs se pose lors de la traversée de cette brèche où “l’on enregistre des centaines d’accidents de navigation chaque année, occasionnant plus de 300 noyés ou disparus entre octobre 2003 et avril 2017”.
