Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, égérie de la lutte contre l’apartheid, s’est éteinte à 81 ans. Surnommée « Mama Wethu », la « mère de la nation », cette figure controversée est restée populaire jusqu’au bout, malgré ses frasques et ses déboires avec la justice. Ses compatriotes noirs se reconnaissent en elle, en raison de l’imbrication de son histoire personnelle avec celle du pays, de longues années de souffrances et des blessures qu’elle en a gardées.
Née en septembre 1936 dans un village du Transkei, en pays xhosa, Winnie Madikizela, qui a perdu très tôt sa mère, est « montée » comme nombre des jeunes de sa génération à Johannesburg pour terminer ses études. Poussée par son père, un fonctionnaire du homeland (« bantoustan ») du Transkei, elle fut la première assistante sociale noire de l’Afrique du Sud, dans ce qui était déjà l’apartheid, instauré en 1948.
Repérée pour sa beauté par le magazine Drum, qui a publié des photos d’elle, mais aussi à un arrêt de bus à Soweto par Nelson Mandela, jeune loup du Congrès national africain (ANC), elle le voit divorcer puis l’épouse en juin 1958. Le couple vit dans une modeste maison de briques à Soweto, avec le luxe inouï d’avoir eau courante et toilettes à l’intérieur. Les rues résonnent alors de leurs querelles en voiture, lorsque Nelson tente de lui apprendre à conduire…
