Plusieurs médias européens accusent l’Azerbaïdjan d’acheter des amitiés à l’étranger, par le biais de fonds à la provenance douteuse. Le Monde et dix autres publications révèlent le fonctionnement de cette « lessiveuse » de l’Azerbaïdjan, un pays du Caucase immensément riche en pétrole, et régulièrement accusé de réprimer les opposants politiques. Le système opaque dénoncé par le collectif de médias aurait permis, par le biais de quatre sociétés britanniques liées au régime azerbaïdjanais, de s’assurer de la bienveillance de plusieurs élus européens.
