D’après le président Macky Sall, le Sénégal est le 9ème pays contributeur de troupes au sein de l’Organisation des Nation Unies (ONU). Actuellement, le Sénégal est présent sur huit (8) théâtres d’opérations extérieures, avec un effectif de plus de 3200 soldats. Le chef de l’Etat a présidé, ce vendredi, la cérémonie de la Journée des Forces armées, sous le thème : « contribution des forces armées sénégalaise à la paix et à la stabilité internationale.
« Nos forces armées soutiennent activement notre diplomatie, en permettant au Sénégal de participer aux efforts de la communauté internationale visant à aider et protéger les populations civiles des zones de conflit. Grâce à une action motivée sur l’engagement de contingents aguerris, nos vaillants “Diambars” ont su bâtir et conserver une excellente réputation », a-t-il poursuivi.
La première participation des militaires à des opérations extérieures remontent à l’aube des indépendances. Ainsi les Diambars étaient les premiers à descendrent au Katanga ex Zaïre, actuel Rd Congo pour mettre fin à la guerre civile. Ensuite, ils sont intervenus au Liban dans les années 80. Puis, dans tous les thâtres d’opérations au monde les soldats sénégalais sous la bannière de l’Onu sont intervenus que cela soit au Libéria, Haïti, Sierra Leone, Guinée Bissau, plus récemment au Mali et en Gambie. Mais, au cours de ces opérations de maintien de la paix, les Diambars ont payé un lourd tribu. Ainsi lors de la première guerre du Golf, un accident d’avion a causé la mort de 92 soldats Sénégalais.
