Depuis le 30 août, plus de 3000 Congolais ont fui les provinces du Tanganyika et du Haut-Katanga dans l’est de la RDC. Des milliers d’entre eux ont trouvé refuge en Zambie. Un afflux qui inquiète le Haut-Commissariat aux réfugiés (HCR).
Ces personnes fuient des affrontements entre forces gouvernementales et milices armées et arrivent dans un état de santé très dégradé. Elles ont fui des violences très graves, explique Katerina Kitidi, porte parole du HCR à Genève:
«C’est un très grand nombre de réfugiés. Dans une seule journée, au 30 août, plus de 600 personnes sont arrivées. La situation demeure très inquiétante parce que ces personnes témoignent d’histoires qui sont très brutales. Ils parlent de meurtres, de viols, de pillages. Ils ont de gros besoins. Un grand nombre d’entre eux sont des femmes et des enfants. On voit beaucoup d’enfants. Quelquefois, ils ont des signes de malnutrition. Il y a le paludisme, des infections respiratoires, de la diarrhée, des infections de la peau. Ils ont des besoins urgents d’assistance, d’aide et de protection, y compris de la nourriture et de l’eau et, bien sûr, après, l’assainissement.»
Le HCR demande 3,5 millions de dollars pour faire face aux besoins de ces réfugiés, sachant que la Zambie accueille déjà 26.000 réfugiés congolais.
