Un hot dog de trop. Après avoir mangé un gros morceau de hot dog à l’école, un enfant de 9 ans s’est soudainement évanoui. Pris en charge par les urgences il a été sauvé in extremis du décès alors que son cœur s’était arrêté. L’expérience vécue par ce garçon turc de 9 ans est tellement rare qu’elle a suscité la curiosité des médias. Ce cas exceptionnel est expliqué par les scientifiques dans la revue Pediatrics. L’enfant a fait une syncope suivie d’un arrêt cardiaque après avoir avalé un hot dog. Les examens médicaux ont révélé que le jeune patient souffre d’un trouble cardiaque rare appelé Le “syndrome de Brugada “. Ce syndrome désigne une pathologie qui associe des anomalies électrocardiographiques et des troubles du rythme ventriculaires graves qui peuvent entraîner comme chez cet enfant des syncopes et des arrêts cardiaques.
Comment le hot dog aurait pu être responsable d’un arrêt cardiaque ? Selon USA Today, cet aliment aurait pu stimuler de façon excessive le nerf vague (qui joue un rôle dans la transmission de l’influx nerveux, dans la fréquence cardiaque ou encore dans la digestion) jusqu’à perturber le rythme cardiaque.
“Dans de rares cas, un arrêt cardiaque soudain peut être observé en fonction d’un possible stimulus vagal, comme le fait de manger une grosse bouchée de nourriture”, selon les médecins interrogés par USA Today.
UN SYNDROME SOUVENT IGNORÉ
Ce syndrome peut se manifester différemment suivant les personnes. Cela peut aller d’évanouissements liés à l’activité physique ou à la détresse émotionnelle jusqu’à la mort subite. “D’autres symptômes comprennent les convulsions, les urines nocturnes inexpliquées ou une respiration étrange pendant le sommeil”, souligne Pam Husband, président et directeur exécutif de la Fondation canadienne des syndromes de mort de l’arythmie soudaine, cité par le site canadien Global news.
Les personnes touchées par le syndrome de Brugada ignorent souvent qu’elles le sont. “C’est un syndrome rare, la population ne pense en général pas à ce genre de problèmes de santé”, pointe Pam Husband.
